What causes these spots on Pottery? Are they from firing or do they develop later? Can you help?

Spots on LRRH

We had a similar jar and we were told that it occurred during the firing and most likely due to a contaminent in the material.

Spot on Pottery

I'll state the obvious. It seems to be some kind of chemical reaction. Is it the paint? The clay? Age/chemical interaction? Before I saw the photo, I was ready to guess grease spots from too many cookies! That can't be it with this location and appearance.
