i am a landscape architect in sydney, australia. when i go to site, i find myself checking out nearby second-hand and vintage shops. i collect Australiana, mostly, but also other things related to my work- botanical and drawing themed things. my collection is now too large and i am reluctantly parting with parts of it.
my blog discusses how to style retro things in your home/studio...whether to re-use the item for it's original purpose- or to re-purpose it. i am interested in exploring how to mix old and new in the home...and the intrinsic design qualities of retro things from the 40s, 50s and 69s.
What's your favorite thing about collecting?
My favourite thing about collecting is displaying a group or set of retro objects. once you have amassed three or more of the same era/style/colour/type you can arrange the pieces as art. framing of these objects is important too- i have designed open shelving that allows me to display and/or use the collection.
Tips and Tricks
- pick a era/stlye/item that appeals to you and then collect around that theme- rather than a whole lot of disparate items, collect within an area.
- research what items generally sell for and have that knowledge when you are buying.
- don't buy things in poor or even fair condition- only excellent condition (with regard to wear and tear over the 50+ years of its life)
