Notes on Shawnee Pottery Company

From Nancy Allen, About.com Guest

Mark on Shawnee Smiley Jar

Barbara Crews
The Shawnee Pottery company was started in 1937 in Zanesville, Ohio. The pottery was named for the Shawnee tribe of Inidans that lived in the area of the company. Many of their items are marked with the style name of the line, hence the Shawnee pig jar mark is shown here as Smiley 60, but it is also marked Shawnee.

Other names on the pottery pieces include Kenwood USA, USA, Patented Chanticleer USA, Shawnee and different variations of the USA plus numbers.

The company ceased operations in 1961.
