Are you a regifter? Do you give away presents that were given to you by friends and family? Surveys say that 60% of people regift, but only 54% think it's a good idea. I think it all depends on what you're regifting and who you're giving it to.
We've all probably had funny stories about regifters. One year we had distant cousins visit our home, bringing a small basket of baked goods. When we took the food out of the basket, there was a gift tag at the bottom that was addressed to the cousins. Someone gave them the food and they regifted it to us, without realizing the gift tag was still left on it. It was tossed. We were not about to eat "home-baked" treats when we had not idea whose home it was baked in.
I don't actually regift my collectibles that were given to me. If someone takes the time to buy something special for my collection, I'll never give it away. The time and thought going into the gift means too much to me. But I've often given away parts of my collection that I've collected over the years, pieces that never saw the light of day. Cookie jars tucked into boxes, glass ornaments that only sparkled in the dark recesses of a closet and snow domes that were never shaken.
My rules are simple.
- I would never give away anything damaged, it must be in perfect condition.
- It must be something that I once loved, but no longer cherish. It must be in excellent condition.
- The recipient always knows it was part of my collection.
- I always tell the history of the item,
- I try to make sure it's something that recipient has admired, commented on or fits their personality. e.g. a landmark ornament for the couple that loves to travel.
- Last, but not least, I make sure it will be well-received.
