Sports Card Reviews: 2005 Upper Deck Past Time Pennants

From Mike Eisner, for About.com

May 8 2005
What do you get when you mix trading cards with collectible felt team pennants?

Funny you should ask, eh? Well, Upper Deck has the answer for all of you – Past Time Pennants.

Past Time Pennants is a collaboration between Upper Deck and “Throwback” jersey manufacturer Mitchell & Ness. It’s a case of yesterday’s greats meet today’s technology with a hint of felt throw in. You dig?

Allow me to explain. Every box of Past Time Pennants contains an exclusive commemorative felt Mitchell & Ness pennant signifying either a historic team or event in baseball history. And you get one of those even before you rip into the stack of packs in a box.

Additionally, every hobby box contains at least two certified autographed cards including all-time greats like Yogi Berra, Brooks Robinson, Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan, just to name a few. Also included are autographs of fan favorites like Kent Hrbek and Ron Santo. There are also dual autographed cards and parallels. What is missing, however, are the staple game-used memorabilia cards.

The base card design is flawless, as is the photography. The majority of the photos on the cards have never been used on a trading card before. That’s what draws many collectors to buy a product like this. The checklist isn’t too bad either, with players like Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb, Ted Williams and Babe Ruth being represented. Good work Upper Deck!

Upper Deck Past Time Pennants is a perfect blend of baseball cards, autographs and collectible pennants. Every hobby box gives you more than just trading cards, which is rare in the hobby these days.

Packs of Past Time Pennants retail for $4.99 and a sealed hobby box should set you back between $80-90.
