Topps Retired Signature Edition 2004

From Mike Eisner, for About.com

Oct 12 2004
Ever since its debut in 2003, Topps Retired Signature Edition maintained rank as one of the most collectible autographed cards in the hobby.

While the $30 per pack price may not be palatable for all types of collectors, the potential of scoring “the big pull” is certainly the major drawing point here.

Each pack of 2004 Topps Retired Signature Edition contains five base cards and one encased and uncirculated certified autograph card of a retired great. There are also parallels of the base set, that are black-bordered and serial-numbered to 299 copies. In addition, there are refractor parallels of the autographs serial-numbered to 25 copies and four versions of autographed “Press Plates” each being serial-numbered to one copy. Oh, and did I mention that there are dual signed cards featuring Willie Mays and Ernie Banks?

Here is what I pulled from a randomly selected hobby box:

Autographs: Ron Swoboda, Kirk Gibson, Darrell Evans, Graig Nettles, Tom Brunansky

Black-bordered base parallel: Whitey Ford.

The risk versus reward ratio with this product is off the charts. You’ll either hit or miss, but keep in mind that if you hit – you will hit big. If a full box is out of your price range, try picking up a pack at your local Target or K-Mart, too.
