Upper Deck SPx Football

From Mike Eisner, About.com Guest

We have come to expect that year after year, the SPx football brand would be at the top of the pile. We had no idea that this year’s product would be an improvement.

Thanks to a cutting-edge card design, and lots of memorabilia and autographed rookie cards, SPx brings something to the table that most high-end football releases don’t – originality.

Oh, and did I mention that they brought back the ever-popular insert set from yesteryear – Holoviews? In fact, there are Holoview “hot boxes.” Now, I am not sure what those particular boxes contain in terms of total number of Holoviews, but I am sure that it’s a pack busters dream.

Now, while I wasn’t fortunate enough to score a Holoview or its big brother – the die-cut Holoview, I did happen to pull three memorabilia cards and one autographed rookie memorabilia card.

The best of the bunch was a dual-jersey card of the Indianapolis Colts 1-2 punch of Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison. I also pulled a game-worn memorabilia card of “The Snake” Ken Stabler and 49ers rookie back Frank Gore.

But, the big pull was an autographed jersey card of rookie quarterback Kyle Orton! (Now if he can only get it together during his next start!)

The SPx brand has been a staple amongst football card enthusiasts and especially in the rookie card circle. The fact that Upper Deck upped the ante to include a nice selection of game-used memorabilia cards, serial-numbered rookie cards (I pulled four) and autographed rookie cards per box, makes it safe to say that 2005 Upper Deck SPx football is one of the best football products released thus far and should continue to hold that distinction throughout the season.

A sealed hobby box should set you back close to a “C note,” but I can tell you that from my experience, it’s certainly worth it. Good luck with your break.
