I am now a big fan of 2005 Upper Deck Trilogy baseball, and all it took was one pack.
Now, after opening my first pack, I had another eight to go, but pulling a redemption for a game-used autographed patch of David Ortiz, the three-time Edgar Martinez DH of the Year Award recipient, was a phenomenal way to start.
Trilogy baseball is jam-packed with super high-end stuff, including at least one game-used and/or autographed card per pack. To be honest, at $29.99 SRP per pack, one should expect to be bombarded with high-end game-used and autographs.
But, Trilogy did it a little bit better than most this year.
In our box we scored some really nice cards including the aforementioned Ortiz. We also pulled autographs of Dwight Gooden and J.J. Hardy. From the memorabilia department, we pulled game-used bat cards from Stan Musial and Cal Ripken Jr. We did, however, pull one stinker in Willie Wilson.
The highlight of the box was a triple game-used patch of Tony Perez, Brian Giles and Jason DuBois serial-numbered to 50. The card was printed on super-duper thick stock and is very, very attractive.
As for the base cards well, lets just say that putting together a complete set from one box is impossible. What I liked was the fact that my box, and other breaks I witnessed, featured only one rookie card. In my box, I pulled a Prince Fielder. Other top rookie cards include Ryan Zimmerman.
In retrospect, I was, and am, very satisfied with my Trilogy box break. You are guaranteed the excitement of pulling at least one game-used and/or autograph card per pack, which is far better than the average high-end baseball box break. The player selection is top notch, as is the case with almost all Upper Deck products.
With sealed hobby boxes retailing for a shade under $300, Trilogy is for the astute collector who appreciates the finer things in card collecting.
