Topps All-Time Fan Favorites Baseball

From Mike Eisner, for About.com

Jun 14 2005
Topps should just rename their Fan Favorites brand “Cards that Never Were.” That would best describe this masterpiece of a product that has captured the hearts and minds of even the most novice collector.

Back for its fifth year, Topps All-Time Fan Favorites baseball is a concoction of yesterdays stars depicted in card sets that they either never appeared in or in a different pose. For example, if you’ve ever wondered what a 1968 Reggie Jackson card would look like – search no more. Fan Favorites has got that Reggie card.

If you’ve ever wondered what a 1981 Topps John Elway card would look like – you, too, don’t have to look any further than Fan Favorites.

And how about that Marvin Miller card that never was? Or a Topps Theo Epstein card? Or a Topps Michael Kay card? The list goes on an on.

Topps also decided to keep with tradition this year by including an average of two certified autograph cards and one serial-numbered refractor parallel in every hobby box. Plus, each hobby box contains a box-topper which contains a game-used relic.

In our box we pulled two certified autographs – Jim Lonborg and Jeff Brantley. While not the best of players, Lonborg is certainly popular with his Boston Red Sox brethren and Brantley was one of the strongest closers in baseball during the 1990’s.

The autograph checklist is superb, boasting a fine mix of retired players, current players, personalities and front office men. Look for first-time Fan Favorites autographs from Michael Kay, Walt Jocketty, Dr. James Beckett, Barry Bonds, Edgar Martinez and Brian Cashman, just to name a few.

As a whole, Fan Favorites is an affordable product that provides enjoyment in every pack. I thoroughly enjoyed the base cards as they all contain new photos that were pulled straight from the Topps vault.

Packs of Fan Favorites retail for $3.99.
