Staffordshire Leech Jar

Leech Jar

Alcock
Favourites across all specialities are those instruments used for bloodletting. They are small but they pack a punch. Scarificators (automatic bleeding machines), thumb lancets and cupping sets to name a few.

On the theme of bloodletting some would consider $5000 a small price for a Staffordshire Leech jar, with perforated holes in the lid to let the leeches breathe. Not only do these jars look stunning but they must provide a fascinating line of dinner party conversation.

Other favourites, when they can be found, are the 19th century anatomical models made from papier-mâché by Dr Auzoux.

Note: Check Phisick.com for numerous images and complete details of each medical instrument shown.
