Nativity Sets

By Barbara Crews, About.com

Celebrating and decorating for Christmas for many people would not be complete without setting out their nativity set. The most beautiful ones are usually expensive and the best way to collect an heirloom nativity is a starting out with the main figures and adding to the set every year.

Since a nativity set is something you will keep for a lifetime, choose carefully. Find the set that speaks to you and your family, there will be one that will be a perfect fit.

1. Wade Nativity

Red Rose Tea
Wade collector or perhaps a Nativity collector? This beautiful set available on the Red Rose Tea web site is certainly a charmer.

2. Fontanini Nativity Set

When I think about a nativity set, the company that comes to mind is Fontanini. Fontanini makes nativity pieces in sizes from 2.5" to 50" tall" -- a size for every home. If you are new to collecting, the basic 5", seven piece set is a wonderful way to start.

3. Fitz and Floyd

Fitz and Floyd is another company that brings the nativity set to collectors, everything the company does is gorgeous and the nativity set is no exception. The figures can be purchased individually and the group can be added to over the years.

4. Lenox China Jewels

Think Lenox and think simple ivory china that is accented with gold and a few enamel embellishments. This classic set has been available for many years and the basic set can be added to every year with the numerous accessories pieces available.

These small folk-art nativities are richly ornamented, multi-layered and constructed of papers, silver and gold foils, cardboard, bits of plastic and faux jewels.

9. Veggie Tales

Veggie Tales? Are you clueless? I was too for a long time, but then the talking (Bob) tomato, lanky (Larry) cucumber and shop-a-holic (Madame) blueberry came into our lives via a three year old grandson. The very popular children's nativity set is only available seasonally.
