If you love antiques, an old feather tree is almost a must have. Unfortunately authentic ones are quite pricey. One dealer told me a good rule of thumb is $100. per foot, e.g. a six foot feather tree would cost around $600. I agree with that estimate, it's what I've seen them sell for, that and even more.
There are several alternatives to the antique feather tree. You can find new feather trees that are based on antique pieces, such as those produced by Bethany Lowe Designs, as well as hand-crafted trees by well known artists (also quite pricey). Another option is buy a feather tree kit, but I after spending twenty minutes trying to do a 2" piece, I won't be trying an entire tree.
