Give Away a Piece at a Time

Sharing with Young Family Members

By Barbara Crews, About.com

My grown children just roll their eyes at the stuff I collect. Although they've enabled me by adding to it at times, most of the time they just groan at the sight of another cookie jar or glass ornament. So I know better than to give them a special jar or ornament. When I want to give one away to a person who will really cherish my special piece, it's time to skip a generation and go younger!

Do you have a young person in the famiy that has admired your collection? Or perhaps asked questions about it? Why not give them a special piece this year? Of course, you could always buy something to give them, but how about a piece that has been in your collection for a while. Include a short story on how you found it, the history or what it might be worth. Also write down how to take care of the collectible. e.g. Keeping it out of the sunlight, dusting only, whatever is appropriate to the collectible.

You just might be suprised at how much your collectible is appreciated and how it just might be the start of either a new collection and a very special bond between the two of you.
