Looking to expand your knowledge of Halloween collectibles? Check out some of the older books that can still be found online.

Authors Stuart Schneider and Bruce Zalkin explore the world of Halloween costumes in their book, Halloween: costumes and Other Treats, ©2001. Flip the papers and you'll probably find the costumes worn during your childhood, or at least the one you wished your parents let you buy. Captain Kangaroo, Star Wars, I Love Lucy, Mr. T, Cabbage Patch dolls, Lone Ranger -- all are depicted in this history of commercially produced Halloween costumes. The book is more than just pictures, with a chapter on explaining what was popular and when, also how current events influenced the costumes that were being produced.

I've always been surprised that Halloween costumes don't command higher prices than they do, but at least a few are very sought after -- Barnabas Collins and Captain Action show values well over $1000.

The book also contains a few chapters including: Costume Accessories, Candy Containers, Figures, Jack O'Lanterns and Other Decorative Pieces.

The authors remind us that "an older item is usually rare, but a rare item is not always older". Also "age is not the main determinant of value". The book will help you decide what you should look for, what's worth pursuing and an idea of what the costumes are worth.
