History of Strawberry Shortcake

The Strawberry Shortcake character was originally launched by American Greetings, Corp. in 1970/1980, on a greeting card for girls. Kenner Products recognized the popularity of the character and, in 1980, introduced the first collection of Strawberry Shortcake dolls. The collection included Strawberry Shortcake, her best friend Blueberry Muffin, Huckleberry Pie and Apple Dumplin'. Over the next five years, Kenner introduced additional dolls and accessories.

Over 25 million dolls and 35 million accessories were sold during the height of Strawberry Shortcake's popularity in the 1980s. Additional merchandise sold included books, records, children's clothing and other toys.
