Her first jar, a gift from a friend, was an American Bisque jack-in-the-box. This sparked a fondness for American Bisque and collecting. At its peak, her collection numbered nearly 500 jars. A veteran of antique shows and flea markets, she has bought, sold and seen it all. Among her very favorite pieces were her mammy jars. She commented that they were her best sellers. She also lamented the effect of eBay on the market, saying it’s “just too easy now” and that it “killed prices”.
However, we have eBay to thank for meeting Ruth. We purchased, through a friend of hers, a R.R.P. Co., locomotive Ruth had for sale. After several months and a few emails it really paid off. The bulk of her remaining jars are in storage but inside the kitchen she keeps her favorites. Perched on shelves in front of a Belgian block window were a Purinton Howdy Doody, Metlox Raggedy Andy, gold-trimmed Puss-n-Boots, Ransbottom Chef, and Bud in his Army green. Up above on the cabinets a Hull Barefoot Boy, McCoy W.C. Fields, and that first jack-in-the-box smiled down at us. We can’t wait to see what other treasures she hidden away.
