Regal China Little Red Riding Hood Jar

Regal China Little Red Riding Hood. Barbara Crews

It's a confusing genealogy -- trying to figure out the true and accurate history of the Louise Bauer Little Red Riding Hood jar. Is your jar a Hull, Regal or Royal China and Novelty Company? Did McCoy make a Little Red Riding Hood jar (NO!)?

There are numerous Little Red Riding Hood cookie jars made, ranging in price from under fifty for Jonal to well over $1000. for a Metlox jar. Add gold trim to a Hull Little Red Riding Hood or put a different decal on it and it can be well over $1000. But many new folks get fooled and purchase a reproduction or fake thinking it is the same jar (Hull or Regal) they saw in a book.

Prices can fluctuate widely with the Internet, so do your homework before spending big bucks on a jar that might wind up to be a reproduction or is, in reality, an inexpensive newer jar.

This gallery shows many of the variations of Hull and Regal China jars, as well as other Little Red Riding Hood jars made by other companies.

One of the most popular and prettiest Little Red Riding Hood jars is the Hull Little Red Riding Hood. The design patent was issued in 1943 to Louise Bauer of Zanesville Ohio. The jar was produced by Hull as "blanks" and then sent to be decorated by the Regal China and Novelty Co in Chicago.

Schneider, the author of The Complete Cookie Jar Book, notes "No doubt many collectors have noticed the uncanny similarities between the red glaze on Hulls Little Red Riding Hood and the red glaze on Regal China's Van Tellingen Peek A Boo Baby. That's because they are the same."

Although Hull did the "blanks" of many of the jars, it is believed that Regal China produced and created some of the jars from scratch. One noted collector/dealer said the consensus appears to be the jars that were Hull blanks and decorated by Regal China, are glazed inside the lid. Whereas the jars made entirely by Regal China will be unglazed inside the lid. Since accurate records were not always kept or found, this cannot be considered 100% accurate but is a good assumption made by those in the know.

Dept 56 Little Red Riding Hood Jar

Department 56. Barbara Crews

In 1998 Dept. 56 debuted a short-lived series of Cookie Jars that were remakes of some of the more popular vintage jars. The line of six new cookie jars were all based on old favorites. There is a Froggie Courting, based on the old jar by Sierra Vista. Also, a Humpty Dumpty Jar based on the Brush jar and Percival Pig based on the Brush Formal Pig. There is also a Moo Cow based on the Brush Purple Cow, a So Tweet Bird is based on the American Bisque Chick and a version of the much-beloved Red Riding Hood from Hull.

As with many Dept. 56 jars, they were not easily found when new and are now even harder to find. Issue price was under $40, but today the jar can easily command more than double that figure.

This Little Red Riding Hood is one of the prettiest new ones produced and has been very popular with collectors.

The jar is 11" tall, weighs 2 lbs 6 oz and can sell for $75 to $125. See markings on the bottom of the jar.

California Originals Little Red Riding Hood Jar

Collectors either love these jars or hate them, they are certainly distinctive looking. This Little Red Riding Hood jar fits into that category. She certainly is a far cry from the previous jar, the NAPCO jar, but still, has a certain charm of her own.

NOT McCoy Red Riding Hood Jar

NOT McCoy. Barb Crews

The REAL (Original) McCoy Company never made a Little Red Riding Hood and these were made to fool collectors. They are typically "aged" or "crazed" to fool a new collector. Jars marked McCoy have brought very high prices on Internet auctions -- folks either think they are buying a "real" McCoy jar or have seen the Hull jar elsewhere and think they are getting that one.

The most common line when selling this is "I have no idea how old this is, as I bought it in Grandma's estate sale". If that is true, Grandma had a pretty lucrative business making jars in her basement. The original McCoy Company never registered or copyrighted their trademark and when this was discovered it opened a Pandora's Box of legal battles, reproductions, and fakes. Different decals are shown on "McCoy" jars, but make no difference in the prices. It should always be a personal choice on the jars you want to include in your collection, these pages are to help you make an informed choice. Many Little Red Riding Hood collectors include this jar in their collection knowing that it is not the real McCoy. (Again, an informed and personal choice.)

Metlox Potteries Little Red Riding Hood Jar

Metlox Potteries. Carol/Jim Boshears

Little Red Riding Hood is one of the more pricey jars from Metlox and one of the more expensive jars in the Little Red Riding Hood collection. I've not seen too many of these come up for sale if you have a chance to get one, expect to pay anywhere from $1000 - $1500.

Jonal Little Red Riding Hood Jar

Jonal/Block. Barbara Crews

Inspired by the Andy Warhol collection of cookie jars, Block China/Jonal produced a series of cookie jars. These were reproductions of some of the well-known jars in his collection, but these were not designed or meant to deceive as the designs were slightly different and are well marked under the glaze.

The series is called the Cookie Jar Classics and included 12 jars based on old jars. From Barbara Schwarz First we have a Stove, based on the white McCoy stove, a Puss in Boots jar, based on the Shawnee Puss in Boots and a Soldier, which is based on the Cardinal Soldier. This line also includes a Red Brick Cottage which is based on the California Originals cottage, two Cookie Time jars, a Cookie Time Girl, and a Cookie Time Boy. These jars could be based on any of the Cookie Time jars (Abingdon, American Bisque, etc). Another version of the Little Red Riding Hood, an After School Cookies based on the American Bisque jar, and a Hamm's Bear from McCoy. There is a "Smiling Oscar" jar, based on a 1943 Robinson Ransbottom jar called Oscar and an Italian Chef based on the McCoy version.
