Collector Spotlight: My Most Expensive Cookie Jar was \$5.00 !

May 2006

From Carol Ann Eichelmann, for About.com

From Carol Ann:
My first cookie jar was one that my Dad bought for my Mother in 1938, when I was about six weeks old. He told Mom she needed to begin learning to bake cookies for her grandchildren! Speaking once for the grandchildren and twice for himself.

I will say that when she became a Grandmother, she always had cookies in the cookie jar.

Mom gave me that cookie jar after I got married, it was a black pottery jar with flowers painted on the front.

I did not want to use it for fear of breaking it, so I purchased another cookie jar that was more like a plain canister. I cannot remember what it had on it, but the jar was broken when my grandchild, who is now 27 years old, decided to help himself to some cookies when he was five.

In the meantime my sister talked me out of the 1938 jar, so I went out and bought another cookie jar at a yard sale, it was a mouse. I paid $5.00 for it and that is the most expensive one I ever bought!

Why?

It was just so cute that I began buying cookie jars when I found them at yard sales and had about 20 cookie jars when I found eBay. My goodness, that began an addiction to the point that I had about 300 when we moved five years ago. Most are still packed away.

But that mouse cookie jar started it all, so I consider it the most expensive cookie jar!
