Collectible Shopping --- at Walmart??
The Price is Right!

Walmart, the store I love to hate, does become one of my frequent stops during the holiday season. Licensed, well-made collectibles usually start showing up in October at very good prices.

And this year is no exception as my last few trips have shown.

If you like advertising collectibles, Disney, Warner Bros, Deere or seasonal items -- it's time to get to your closest Walmart(s). Although many people prefer to collect only older pieces, the prices are so low for some of these, that it's worth picking them up and sticking them in the attic until they become old! One problem is that different Walmarts stock different products and it can take a visit to several different stores to find everything available. I went to three different superstores to find the following and although there was some overlap, each store had stock no other store had.

And best of all for the collector -- the prices are very low, much less than identical pieces sold elsewhere and they are well-made. Except for the Campbell Soup and Field & Stream Pots, every thing else was $15. or less. The best find was a great gift set of four Raggedy Ann mugs with cocoa for $10.

Here are some of the things available this year:

  • Teapots: Winnie the Pooh, Angels, and Snowman Teapot.
  • Serving: M & M candy plate with matching mugs.
  • Mugs: Jack Daniels, Raggedy Ann, M & M's, and Smores.
  • Campbell Soup: Large stock pot, soup tureen, assorted soup mug sets.
  • Field & Stream: large chili pot with metal mugs.
  • Advertising Cookie Jars: Oreo House, Oreo Bear, John Deere Tractor, Coca Cola Can, Coca Cola Fountain, Coca Cola Delivery Bear, Coca Cola Bear Crock, Coca Cola Can, Coca Cola vending machine. Bear
  • Licensed Cookie Jars: Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, Winnie the Pooh w/bee on nose, Tigger, Mickey Bust, Mickey & Minnie in red car, Sylvester and Tweety in bird cage.

Other than the above pottery and ceramic pieces, there were numerous advertising tins, banks and figurines of the more popular licensed products. And many of the items on the Hot Picks for 2002 list was still available at the stores.
