I'm really NOT a Barbie Collector, but - - -
There are a few that have found their way home with me. I don't know why they've never struck that certain chord with me, perhaps I
remember all too well naked tangled dolls on the bottom of my daughters' closets. The hair was always matted and they never could find both
shoes at the same time or all of the parts of the outfit. Cleaning out the Barbie closet always became a big mother-daughter ordeal,
complete with arguments and threats to throw them all away. So, that might have something to do with my non-obsession with these dolls.
 |
When I started collecting Advertising items in earnest, Barbie showed up once again. The Oreo Barbie, Little Debbie, Coca Cola and Harley
Davidson Barbies were all interesting and I even bought a few of them, but never really went crazy over them or felt I HAD to have them.
In fact a few of them are stored away in some box in my infamous attic, never to see the light of day. |
BUT all this changed in the last few months, Barbie finally clicked the right button for me.
Over the years Mattel has always strived to be
politically correct by portraying Barbie in numerous occupations -- doctor, pilot, astronaut, vet, etc.
But Mattel has finally let Barbie come into her own
Barbie is now a COLLECTOR!
Pin Collector Barbie
One of the first ones that really caught my eye was the Sydney 2000 Pin Collector Barbie -- there are several Olympic Athlete and an Olympic Fan Barbie
available, but this one was just way too cool.
Dressed in drawstring pants, Olympic t-shirt, and a great hat and vest both festooned with logos, she is
ready for some pin trading or collecting.
Barbie carries a tote bag, wears sensible shoes and has a full size pin for for the Sidney 2000 Olympics with a Barbie logo on it.
Yes, she was a winner and one I had to have! This doll was found at Toys R Us.

Cool Collecting Barbie
Next I found the Cool Collecting Barbie -- and this one really fits the bill for Collectors. First she is dressed in a retro look including
pedal pushers (cropped pants to the youngsters here), blouse with matching headband, purse and matching shoes and belt.
Barbie comes complete with three miniature and very collectible toys -- an
Ask the Magic 8 Ball, a Viewmaster with three working disks and the first Barbie game.

| The hair style and clothing colors are reminiscent of the
times that these toys were brand new and check out those great sunglasses too!
This doll is available on line at eToys and Toys R Us for approximately $60. |

Lingerie Barbie

Lingerie Barbie
My latest Barbie doesn't really fit the collecting mode, but it is so different it was almost a must-have! A Bloomingdale catalog arrived
that had a picture of Barbie that just made me start chuckling, is this doll supposed to appeal to Guys? Girls?
Although the official name is Lingerie Barbie. I think this one could almost be called the Playgirl Barbie as her outfit consists of her underwear.
Yes, panties, bra, garter belt, stockings. and of course high heels. Not quite sure who the market for this one is,
but since I was on a roll I added it to my growing non-collection. |

|
The doll is a Silkstone Barbie doll body and is described as having "elegant underpinnings with a discreet measure of intimate charm".
The doll is part of the Fashion Model Collection and is a Limited Edition. I purchased the doll from Bloomingdale for approximately $50. |
It's getting harder not to think pink when visiting the toy store, but so far I am holding out pretty good, a few dolls doesn't necessarily make a collector. But it does
make me appreciate Mattel and their great ideas. It's especially fun when one of these dolls touches your lifestyle or your passion, so I am now
waiting for Mattel to come out with the AARP Barbie -- and I'll be one of the first in line!
