See Rock City, painted on over 900 barn roofs dotted the American
landscape for many years and still intact in some places. Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee is the place of this famous tourist attraction. Started in 1932 by Garnet and Frieda Carter, the natural formation of rocks, caverns and caves, still delights tourists from around the world. | |
| Cookie jar collectors Bob and Kay Glab (BoKay Designs) live about ten minutes from Rock City and have been toying with the idea of a Rock City cookie jar for a while. In 1998 everything worked out and their had a new licensed jar for sale. The jar is a model of the Rock City Birdhouse, stands about 9" tall and is well made. |  |
The Rock City Birdhouse was originally conceived as a mailbox in the 1950's, but was not approved by the US Post Office. Undaunted, Rock City promoters punched holes in the mailboxes and proclamed them to be birdhouses. (The painted barn came first, next the mailbox -- which was not approved and turned into a birdhouse, now the cookie jar replica!) The birdhouse is now considered to be a true piece of American history and is part of the permanent exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum. It is also at the Smithsonian Institute. The Glabs helped recreate a reminder of the good old days of Sunday drives and vacations in the mountains in a superb way. Unfortunately, the company is no longer in business.
