Valentine Day
You either love it or hate it!

Is it another commercial day designed to make you spend money or is truly a day for you and your loved ones to spend meaningful time together?

Valentine day sentiments have been exchanged since the seventeenth century between lovers and friends. Printed post cards became popular in the eigthteenth century when technology in printing made it more affordable for the average person.

The actual roots of
St. Valentine's Day

are a little muddy.
Is it to commemorate the two saints of the same name who suffered martyrdom in Rome or with the pagan festival of the Lupercalia?

According to American Greetings, it was in the 1840s when the first mass produced valentines were available in the U.S. Today it is the second most popular holiday for greeting cards, Christmas is number one with card buyers.

Today our Valentine collectibles include much more than just cards. They can be anything from an porcelain figurine to a Disney bean bag. As holiday collecting becomes more popular, manufacturers are doing their best to satisfy our quest.

But it is the old, used Valentine post cards that catch my attention. These are both affordable and decorative and they all tell a story. A visit to a few antique booths in the area had me spending a few hours perusing their cards. You can find Valentine greetings that are old beautiful elaborate cards or you can opt for simple post cards from the turn of the century (the last century!). The unused cards in excellent condition command higher prices in my area, but the worn ones with folded edges and a bit of correspondence on them tugged at my heart.

One of the favorite cards has very little written on it -- dated in 1912, it says:

From Dickey D
I am age 17 yrs, 1 mo, 3 days
Miss Marie M.
Miles, Iowa

Was he a would-be suitor? Did he even know her or was this way of introducing himself? Many cards had similar puzzles that intrigued me.

Browse through the old postcards next time you are in a flea market. You will find a real piece of history with a personal touch.
