conchologist
<Back to Last Page>     < Full Glossary>

Definition: one who specializes in shells

Pronunciation: [con-KOL-oh-jist]

Related Words: conchology: the field itself [con-KOL-uh-gee]

Word Roots:
  conch- = shell
  -ologist = specialist;
  -ology = specialty

Resource:

Mike Sheehan, Author of The Word Parts Dictionary
Note from Sheehan:
Whenever you see the endings "-ologist" or "-ology", you've usually gone beyond the hobby stage and into a scientific career. For a collector of shells, as opposed to a marine biologist, it might be better to use the words "conchophile" or "conchophily," although they don't show up in a dictionary.
