heortologist
< Back to Last Page>     < Full Glossary>

Definition: one who studies religious calendars (by extension: and collects).

Pronunciation: [he-or-TOL-oh-jist]

Related Words: heortology: the study itself [he-or-TOL-uh-gee]

Word Roots:
  heort- = festival
  -ologist = specialist;
  -ology = specialty

Resource:

Mike Sheehan, Author of The Word Parts Dictionary
Note from Sheehan:
This one shows up on various websites as meaning "collecting heart-shaped objects." That is WRONG. If such a word existed, it would have to be something like cordatophile, since "-cordato-" (Latin -cord-, Greek -card-) means heart-shaped, and "heort-" means nothing but feast or religious festival.
