What's Hot in Donruss!
~Michael Eisner

In keeping with the holiday season, which incidentally just passed, I would like to begin by wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. Speaking of prosperous, Donruss/Playoff's plate was chock-full of cardboard during the last two weeks of 2002 and into the first few days of 2003. Here's a bird's eye view of the Donruss/Playoff products that made headlines during the past few weeks:

2003 Donruss Baseball

Back for 2003 is their signature brand of baseball, only new and improved. With even more rookie cards than last year and top quality photography, 2003 Donruss baseball is surely a force to be reckoned with when it comes to your basic baseball set. One of the true highlights this year is that Donruss bucked the hobby trend and decided not to short print any of the 400 cards in the set, which includes 50 "Rated Rookies," a favorite of years past. This set's retro feel wouldn't have been complete without including fan-favorite "Diamond Kings," which were randomly inserted.

ANALYSIS - What a start for Donruss in 2003! Every 13-card pack is filled to the brim with superstars and rookies, and an occasional flashy insert or two. This is a set collector's dream, as none of the 400 cards in the set are short printed, thus giving everyone who buys this product a fair shake at a complete set.

2002 Donruss "The Rookies"

When I first opened this box I was not sure what to think, because I was accustomed to receiving my 'Rookies' in complete set form. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by what this product had to offer. Included in the set are rookie updates for Donruss Elite, Classics, Diamond Kings and Studio, including all the parallels. There are autographs and game-used memorabilia cards, as well as a plethora of serial-numbered inserts of phenoms such as Drew Henson and Joe Borchard. What I especially love about this product is the rookie checklist. While the majority of these players have cards already this year, there are some rookies that simply did not make any other manufacturers radar and debut in this product. Look for serial numbered rookie cards of Colorado Rockies farmhand Jeff Baker, whose Elite Extra Edition rookie card has been steadily moving for $40 or more on eBay.

- A true gem, "The Rookies" has been a strong seller since being released last month. Who, in their right mind, would pass up an opportunity to purchase a product consisting solely of rookie cards? This could be one of the sets of the year.

2002 Playoff Contenders Football

Most hobbyists look forward to this release every year. This year, however, Playoff decided to split up the box into two "mini-boxes," which gives the novice collector the opportunity to spend a little bit less money and still walk away with an "unopened" box of cards. Every mini-box contains at least one autograph, and may possibly contain a game-used memorabilia card, as well. The autograph "Rookie Tickets" are among some of the hobby's hottest rookie cards and have been serial-numbered to less than 400 this year, a significant decrease over previous years. If you are looking for a "top-shelf" football product, this one should be on your radar screen.

ANALYSIS - The "cream of the crop" when it comes to Playoff football issues. Historically, the autographed "Rookie Tickets" have been some of the best rookie cards on the market. This year's product is one of the best Playoff has ever produced.

Upcoming Donruss Releases include Donruss Team Heroes Baseball (12/31 release)
