June 1, 2006 The M.I. Hummel Club began its year-long 30th Anniversary celebration today, maintaining its status as the most successful collector's Club in the world. Club members will enjoy a full year of celebrations, including a special anniversary party combined with a traditional Oktoberfest on October 21st, 2006 at the Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas. The fun-filled event is expected to draw over 2000 members, as well as many enthusiasts who have not yet joined the Club. It will feature appearances by artists, authors and dignitaries from the world of M.I. Hummel and will include traditional German food, music, and atmosphere.
The original concept of a collector's club was born in response to a groundswell of enthusiasm for M.I. Hummel figurines, handcrafted by the premier German porcelain manufacturer, W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik. Originally known as the Goebel Collectors' Club, the unique organization attracted over 100,000 collectors in 1977, its founding year. After three decades, the M.I. Hummel Club is international, with nearly 175,000 members around the globe including more than 10,000 Charter Members, who have been with the Club since it began.
Carrie Kulak, Director of the M.I. Hummel Club in North America, attributes the Club's success to a few basic elements. "The founders appealed to the most important desires of collectors by being responsive to their wishes, and making the collecting experience special for them. We couldn't have lasted thirty years without that caring attitude which is still the foundation of the Club today."
The enthusiasm for M.I. Hummel figurines had its roots in postwar Germany. American GIs were attracted to the earthenware treasures they saw in local shops -- charming depictions of Bavarian country children. They sent the figurines home as mementos, and M.I. Hummel items gained steady popularity in America.
Whatever intangible qualities make people want to collect a gentle beauty, skillful handcraftsmanship, a gift for touching the heart -- M.I. Hummel figurines have them all, which is why they became the world's most beloved collectible.
