Hannah sometimes stirs up more than she can handle in Joanne Fluke's latest diet destroying
novel, Strawberry Shortcake Murders.
Hannah Swenson, owner of The Cookie Jar (cafe and bakery), seems to have trouble fall
into her lap or rather into her creations!
As the names implies, food plays a big part in Fluke's novels. Don't
start reading one of her books if you are on a diet-- the frequent mention of cookies, desserts
and recipes will have you running to the kitchen to find something
to munch on. And it most likely will involve chocolate!
Strawberry Shortcake Murder is centered around the
Hartland Flour Dessert Bake-Off-- a big deal in Lake Eden, that the town folks hope will become an annual
affair. It's a fun, light hearted
mystery to read and gets you quickly involved trying to figure
out the latest criminal in the quiet town of Lake Eden. Unfortunately my guesses were not very good,
as my first one wound up as the second victim.
Fluke makes Hannah come to life as her everyday problems all play a part in the story.
Her mother is still trying
to marry her off and her sister is always better dressed and more together. But Hannah is
sure to touch many of us as she feels awkward and self conscious -- obviously much more comfortable
in front of a mixer than in front of a TV camera.
Hannah is a collector's type of heroine.
She shops the thrift stores, wears a shirt that says "Got Cookies and
feeds her beloved cat Moise from a Garfield bowl!
As Hannah goes around solving the town murders, she still has time to whip up some wonderful desserts.
The recipes are shared in the book and will make you want to finally fill those cookie jars
you have on display!
