The Retro Look -- Looks Retro!

Think about it -- just how many new cookie jar ideas can a company or designer come up with that still excite us. New ideas that haven't been done before? Although there is still a design or two I'd like to see done, there are very few that haven't already been tried.

Authentic vintage jars in good condition still command nice prices, but unfortunately old jars become scarcer every day. It's caused several manufacturers to start looking towards those very designs that have appealed to both collectors and folks that like to decorate with collectible-type items. And since retro/vintage/antique -- whatever you want to call it -- is so popular with collectors, different companies probably thought "why not just repeat that old design look in new pieces?" Even though they started being produced just a few years ago, many of the retro jars are, themselves, becoming quite the collectible. Have you tried to find one of the Dept. 56 retro jars from several years ago? It's not easy and they're typically not bargains!

Several years ago Midwest did a Shawnee Sailor look-a-like, it's a jar that I've had numerous questions about after folks see the pictures (here) on the Collectibles web site and want to find one for themselves. And now Midwest has recently have come out with a new line of vintage looking designs and accessories for the retro-look market. Since I haven't seen the items in person, I can't comment on the quality of the pottery, but the pictures look terrific! Midwest's someone's in the kitchen product line is huge. Just a small sampling of the items includes: five cookie jars, wooden handled cookie cutters, embroidered dish towels, retro-looking salt & pepper sets, refrigerator magnet sets (of cookie jars), pottery ornaments that look like cookie jars, along with a night light and toothpick holder in the pig (jar) design.

From Midwest "The retro styling and festive colors of someone's in the kitchen recall family traditions celebrated in the heart of the home."

The five jars include the Cookie Time Clock, Snowman, Santa, Chef, and Pig. Suggested retail prices are in the $35. range, with sizes ranging from 11" - 13" tall. Not shown is a great looking Cookie Time Wall Clock made of earthenware, clock is 7.5" x 9.25", uses 1 AA battery and retails for approximately $25.

Other suggested prices are: magnets $10. a set; night light - $13; Salt & Peppers - $10; cookie jar ornaments - $8. (7 different).

Although I have numerous older cookie jars and there is nothing quite like the patina of an old jar, there is still a place in my collection for the new, retro-look jars. Many times I like to display old and new side-by-side, other times I use the newer jars for the purposes originally intended -- to hold cookies. To me it doesn't matter if a jar is old or new, as long as I like it and I wasn't deceived by thinking I was getting an old jar.

Why buy a retro-looking jar instead of an authentic vintage jar?

  • Want the look, don't care about the authenticity.
  • Price is almost always quite a bit less.
  • Use it without any worries about the values being diminished by use.
  • You're not afraid for the kids to get cookies out of the jar.
  • Vintage jars are not always easy to find or in the condition you might want in a jar to use.
