Pay For Online Auction Purchases

By Barbara Crews, About.com

Speed up the delivery by making sure the seller knows just what you are purchasing.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 10 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Print a copy of screen shot as soon as auction is completed.
  2. Make sure copy shows picture of item and completed price.
  3. Email seller to confirm purchase and shipping address.
  4. Find out what payment methods seller requests, e.g. money orders, checks, Paypal, Bidpay or whatever.
  5. If item is fragile, offer to pay for extra bubble wrap and double boxing. Most sellers will do this without charging extra -- if you ask ahead of time.
  6. Make sure payment includes insurance. Don't ever buy without insurance -- unless the price is so low and item is readily available that you feel you can afford to skip it. (Even then -- I still pay insurance!)
  7. Print a copy of email from seller and send along with payment. There have been numerous times that I've received cash or check and have no idea what item is being paid for.
  8. Notify seller that payment has been sent and request notification when it has been received.
  9. Thank seller when item is received in good condition and be sure to leave feedback.
  10. Keep copy of auction price and picture for inventory and insurance purposes.

Tips:

  1. If it is absolutely necessary to send cash, send it registered mail.
  2. Always send along description of item as well as auction number.
