2003 Playoff Prime Cuts Baseball Cards

Now, I was a little bit apprehensive about the hobby’s first $150 pack. I mean, I was skeptical back when the first $50 pack debuted in 2001 and that was subsequently followed by the hobby’s first $100 pack later that year. Now, the stakes have been taken a bit higher with 2003 Playoff Prime Cuts.

For starters, each pack comes in it’s own presentation box (very impressive, I might add.) Each pack contains 3 base cards serial-numbered to 949 and a game-used and/or autograph card serial-numbered to 50 or less. In addition, the game-used/autograph card is encased in a Beckett Grading Services holder, though no grade has been assigned. This was done strictly for authentication purposes.

I must say that I was extremely excited about opening my sample pack of Prime Cuts. For those of you that don’t know, Donruss/Playoff purchased the earliest known Babe Ruth pinstripe jersey from a Mastronet auction last May, and cut up the jersey in a ceremony at ESPNZone in New York City last September. Of the first 25 cuts, 24 of the Ruth swatches from this jersey were inserted into Prime Cuts. The first cut, serial numbered “01/25”, was presented to Ruth’s daughter, Julia Ruth-Stevens, during the ceremony.

As I ripped into my pack, I was surprised to find a beautiful Rickey Henderson game-used patch card serial-numbered to 50. This was on top of the 3 serial-numbered base cards that I pulled – George Brett, Magglio Ordonez and Roger Clemens.

Overall, this product was one of the most exciting rips I have ever encountered. If you have fat pockets and can afford to shell out $150-200 per pack, this product will surely satisfy your appetite for high-end cardboard.

I mean this is the stuff that dreams are made of.
