Fleer Platinum Shines

From Mike Eisner, for About.com

Fleer Platinum DellMike Eisner

Some of you might remember Fleer Platinum from back in 2001 – really hot Albert Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki rookie cards. Does that jog your memory?

How about the 2001 Platinum jumbo packs that introduced the hobby to the infamous “Nameplates” insert set that included a large piece of a game-used jersey patch? Do you remember now?

I thought so.

Ever since the product’s inception in 2001, Fleer Platinum has been synonymous with outstanding game-used patch cards, and the 2004 version is certainly no different.

Every single box of 2004 Platinum contains 20 wax packs and 4 Jumbo packs. And, every single box is guaranteed a Nameplates insert as they are randomly inserted into hobby exclusive Jumbo packs.

The base set resembles a set long tucked away in Fleer’s past – 1984. That year, hobbyists were treated to rookie cards of Don Mattingly and Daryl Strawberry, and an Update set that included some of the most important rookie cards of our time including Roger Clemens and Kirby Puckett.

As far as collectibility goes, this set is at the top of my list thanks to the top-notch photographs and spectacular player selection.

If you are on a tight budget, look no further than Fleer Platinum as hobby boxes are relatively inexpensive at $60-65 per. And based on what I pulled from my randomly selected box, you certainly get a big bang for your buck:
Platinum Finish – (2) Randy Johnson; Livan Hernandez
MLB Scouting Report – Rocco Baldelli
Name Plates Patch – Austin Kearns
