Donruss Timelines - 2003

The idea of collecting baseball cards, at least in my opinion, is to keep older collectors from feeling old. The smell of nostalgia oozes from each and every pack of cards that us older folks rip open. Such was the case with 2003 Donruss Timelines, a foray back into the “hey days” of collecting for me – the 1980’s.

Each 4-pack box of Timelines boasts 4 certified autographs, 4 relics and 12 base cards.

The autographs are “encased” in a custom-designed single-screw holder, reminiscent of those that dominated the hobby back in the late 1980’s – early 1990’s. The driving factor here, however, is that on average – each box contains 2 “Recollection Collection,” or buy-back, autographs. We were lucky enough to score a Gary Carter 1989 Recollection Collection and a 1982 Dusty Baker Recollection Collection.

In addition to the buy-backs, we also pulled Boys of Summer autographs from Daryl Strawberry and Jack Morris.

As you may know, Donruss employed a “pack within a pack within a pack” concept with Timelines, thus creating 3 packs in one. Contained within the first pack was the autograph and contained within the second pack was the memorabilia insert. Our box yielded game-worn jersey cards of Mike Piazza, Randy Johnson, Jim Thome and Miguel Cabrera. Not too shabby a lineup if you ask me.

The last part of the pack contained 3 base cards.

As a whole, we were very impressed with the effort put forth by Donruss/Playoff. The concept of making the buy-back autograph more accessible to the average collector places Timelines on a whole new level for the other card manufacturers to reach.
