Bidding began on May 12 with an initial bid of $5.00. As knowledgeable collectors became aware of the item, bid amounts quickly increased. By the end of the day the high bid was $3,978.00. The auction generated a great deal of discussion on message boards, including speculation on how the seller should ship the fragile plate to the winning bidder. The seller chose to hand-deliver the rare piece to the buyers. The buyers, collectors from Little Rock, AK, confirm receipt of the piece and are thrilled to have had the opportunity to add such a rare piece to their collection.
Description of piece -- from eBay auction: This is absolutely beautiful. The plate is Northwood Strawberry Pattern in soft blue and you can see purple, green, pink and gold as you move it. This is a full size dinner plate. I'm not sure of the age but it belonged to my husband's grandma who recently passed away at age 92.
Additional information:
"What makes this Northwood Strawberry Pattern plate highly desirable is the rarity of its color, according to glass expert Reyne Haines, co-owner of JustGlass.com. "The color is Ice Blue," Haines said. "This is one of four known plates - two have been damaged, which makes this plate the second perfect one."
