Shade holder for a candle which fits into the spring loaded tube.Top circle holds the metal shade. Bottom prongs fits into candlestick holder.
Well I was going to say a potato masher but then I read Joyce’s comment and hers sounds much more logical!

I was a similar track… I was thinking perhaps a wick holder for a lantern.
I definitely think it’s a ricer or potato masher. I’m dying to find out what really is – such a mystery!
It looks a bit like the gadget that was used to make a spark to light a propane torch.
