Michael Jackson Memorabilia

Friday June 26, 2009
Heritage Auction Galleries reports they have been inundated with phone calls and emails regarding Michael Jackson’s influence on pop culture in general and collecting in particular.

Collectors know that anytime someone famous passes away or there is a newsworthy event, great interest is shown in memorabilia of the person involved. When someone of the notoriety and stature of Michael Jackson passes, the flood gates will be opening, especially on the Internet. This is probably the biggest celebrity death since the Internet has grown and matured to the point it is today. In fact the news of Michael Jackson's death literally slowed down traffic on the Internet to a crawl on the afternoon of his demise. News sites couldn't keep up and Twitter was overwhelmed.

Typically when something changes overnight to cause values to soar, it said to wait until the furor dies down and don't overpay. Except for the huge increase in buying and selling of Jackson items over the next few weeks, overall I'm not sure if the furor will die down for Michael Jackson's stuff (authentic memorabilia) and at some point in time wonder if he will indeed surpass Elvis in the terms of worth of a "dead" celebrity. Most of it will depend on how well his legacy and estate are managed. It should prove interesting.

From Heritage Auctions:
“To the collectibles market Jackson’s passing means a sudden interest in what had been a steady, if somewhat stale, sub-category. Overnight, however, that has changed,” said Doug Norwine, Director of Music & Entertainment Auctions at Heritage

According to Norwine, “Jackson’s legions of fans have always coveted items associated with the singer and the emotional value of these pieces is incalculable.”

“Autographs and items from Michael’s prime will prove to be the most valued and cherished by fans looking to collect anything related to the legendary singer. Something to keep in mind, however, is the inevitable trend of Michael Jackson collectibles flooding the market. Rare, authenticated pieces – Thriller-era autographs, video and concert worn costumes and personal mementos, will always be prized,” said Norwine.
