My comment for this week is -- BE SPECIFIC! There are very similar items to this, but this particular piece has a very specific use and is marked as such on the handle. Size is probably 14" - 16".

The Answer!

Congratulations to Joyce L. for being the first to post the correct answer to last week's Mystery Item.

I have no idea. Looks like some kind of letter opener, but that’s not very specific so I’m sure it’s incorrect.
Happy WW!

(2) Newlyweds Guide Francesca says:

I am clueless. But it looks like a knife or something for the police to use. My niece who is sitting next to me thinks it is some sort of garden tool.

Ok it looks as if the square at the top might slide so as to measure something that you might cute. Say soap for instance. Not quite sure what the round circle would be for except to hang it from when not in use. So final answer soap slicer. LOL

(4) Beth says:

I’m going to guess that it’s seen upside down and that it’s a scale of some kind. The big ring would be what it hangs by, the part on the left side of the photo is a sliding counterweight, and the right-hand side is made to slip a rope holding the thing to be weighed over it.

How’s that for guessing! ;)

Where do you get all these crazy items? :)

I’m leaning toward a scale, too.

I think it could be something to bring the sides of gold/silver bars together so the sides would be straight. From the gold rush era.

I BELIEVE IT IS PART OF AN OLD COTTEN GEN SCALES. YOU HANG WEIGHTS ON LEFT END AND THE COTTEN SACK OFF THE RING.

(14) Sukhmandir Kaur says:

Boot Jack crossed my mind, but it appears to be calibrated and the edge is perfectly flat and straight. It could be for weighing but my guess is an instrument used to measure and perhaps pack something according to a specific dimension.

This is a Scale(Hanging type by the rings on top&bottom)for sure! But using purposes can be different depending on the countries&The regions.Because İt is metal Some use it to weigh the meats&Fish(Easy to wash the fats&odours). But this can be also used for weighing The Cotton+wool+woods(special to start fire)+Charcoal+flour+corns etc.Whatever you want to weigh with it.Love &Respect from Turkey-Izmir city West-Coast.

(18) Linda French says:

It’s a cotton scale. You hang the wrapped bolls on the ring and slide the weight up to determine the weight.
