Catalogs in the Mail

A few years ago I decided to save all the gift catalogs I received in the mail from around August until Christmas time. The stack was about four feet tall. This year's bounty would already be close to that height and it's still September!

I try to take at least a quick browse through most of them to get an idea of what's being offered that's different and new. I'll be sharing a few favorite choices that will appeal to collectors, updating this blog over the next few months.

  • grandinroad.com
I love this catalog for Halloween decor and party goodies. There are wonderful looking candle holders, black roses, outdoor ghosts, raven candlesticks, great stuff to decorate a mantle, large twiggy trees and wreaths to use for ornaments, gargoyles and much more. This is one of the best catalogs I've seen for fun, but unusual Halloween stuff that's also affordable. You won't find these things in your local stores. The piece de resistance? Life-size mummies! ($99/$129)
  • Hammacher Schlemmer
Touted as "America's Longest Running Catalog", Hammacher Schlemmer is hard to categorize, they have a little bit of everything and much of it is unusual. Want an animatronic singing and talking Elvis bust? They have one that sings eight songs. It looks a little scary to me, but might be just what the Elvis collector would want for $299.95. Holiday items include a classic looking aluminum Christmas tre with color wheel, an upside down Christmas tree, a Lionel Holiday train set, as well as several Thomas Kinkade pieces.
  • Neiman Marcus
Many folks don't even think about Neiman Marcus as a choice for holiday items, but they're wrong. There won't be any bargains, but you will find lots of beautiful items to add to your collections. Look for amazing menorahs by Jay Strongwater Menorah and Waterford, silver angels from Emilia Castillo, glass Italian ornaments, holiday folk art from Debbee Thibault and Fabrege egg ornaments.
