Pork Barrel = Teapot Museum?

Monday April 10, 2006
Many collectors dream of one day housing their treasures in a museum, but most of us have never thought about asking the government to help! The teapot museum in Sparta, North Carolina is getting government funds to the tune of $500,000, causing John McCain to call the "teapot museum case a 'really egregious' example of what is wrong with the budget appropriations process." I would guess he's not a collector. The Sparta Teapot Museum will house the Kamm Collection of over 6,000 teapots with a value of exceeding $5 million.

As a collector it's great to see these art pieces have a proper home, but I'm not sure US tax dollars should be spent on a home for what was a private collection, private funds would be more suitable.

From what I've read, it looks like a total of ten million is being raised for the museum, with $500,000 of it from the US government, so the good news is that we are not paying for the whole thing! According to Citizens Against Government Waste, another museum in this year's CAGW’s 2006 Pig Book is the Glass Museum in Tacoma, Washington. Museum of Glass Tacoma, Washington.

How do you feel about this issue? Does it belong on McCain's List?

Take the Poll: The Sparta, N.C. Teapot Museum, Should it be on the Pork Barrel List?

I think the senator is right. There are too many things in the country that need funding to waste money on something like this. Of course the senators and congressmembers will do almost any thing to get a few more votes.

I’d rather spend the money on cultural institutions such as museums in our country than on rebuilding or financing activities overseas!

why not a tea pot museum? the government spends hundreds of thousads of dollars to send the dhs to the bahamas, and europe, and other top dollar destinations for “meetings” and to “study other ways to improve” the dhs. when it’s been proven no meetings were held. we fund research to tell us hamburgers make us fat, and to study rare mosquitos only found in one isolated area of the amazon jungle approxamately the size of 1/2 acre. not to mention saleries for congress and the senate, now there’s a waste! they’ll vote themselves a raise just before the fiscal budget runs out, and just in time to get in on the cost of living boost they think is helping! so, why not a tea pot museum? i’d much rather fund it than any of those other assinine things labled as “research”!

Well, what an interesting article on the teapots. funny, and you didn’t know this, when I lived in L.A. I did the Long Beach Flea Mkt. every month. Sonny used to come each month and stand in line with my other customers to purchase teapots for his collection. I used to be very big in teapots as they used to call me the ‘teapot lady’.
In Sonny’s collection are many of my teapots as well. I have been to his house and he has beautiful items and have seen his collection when they traveled around in my area.
I now live in GA and haven’t seen him in 7 yrs., but I am looking forward to the opening of the museum. I was, however, unaware that the govt. had granted money for this.
I still vote yes as the govt. will give money for other things, might as well give it to someone who brings pleasure to people.
thanks,
Carole

On my comment above I said ‘yes’ to the vote, but I was meaning yes, he should have the money!!! The govt. gives out money for other things so it should go to someone who brings pleasure and happiness to other people. Please forgive me Sonny, as I wrote the previous comment incorrectly and have changed my vote to ‘NO’ on the list.

I live in Sparta, this is the worst thing money could be spent on. What we need here is a dam on the new river. That would bring more money to the town than a tea pot museum. Maybe they could get some hydro elec. out of it. So the town would make energy (clean at that) and also bring in money from people coming to see the lake(from the dam). This is just my opinion.

thank you
