California Raisin, AFLAC Duck, Mr. Peanut?

Monday October 4, 2004
UPDATE: Who's your favorite advertising icon? The inaugural advertising week kicks off in September and the industry wants to know your favorite icon and slogan. It was really a hard pick for me, so many old time favorite ads flashed by as I saw the names. The only thing I think is a bit unfair is the majority are classics. That is they've been around for quite a while and might best be remembered by the baby boomer (and older) age set, but not by the younger group who probably does a lot of the voting. Therefore I think an icon like the AFLAC duck, who I must admit is great, might garner a lot more votes, only because he is fairly current. But that's just my two cents on the matter.

As for the favorite ad slogans, that was even harder for me to pick. So many of them have worked their way into our everyday language, how on earth to pick the best. Is there an advertising slogan Hall of Fame? Almost all of them deserve to be in one!

The voting is now over, the votes are in and top advertising characters are:

  1. M & M Characters
  2. AFLAC Duck
  3. Mr. Peanut
  4. Pillsbury Doughboy
  5. Tony the Tiger

Next the all-time slogan winners:
  1. Melts in your mouth, not in your hands. (M&M's)
  2. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. (Almond Joy/Mounds)
  3. Where's the beef? (Wendy's)
  4. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. (United Negro College Fund)
  5. Can you hear me now? (Verizon)
